The Life of Sloth

(Previously) Wandering amongst the mountains of New Zealand in search of cheese

September 2008 - Posts

  • Mt Cheeseman - it's not made of cheese

New Zealand weather is so unpredictable, it really can't make it's mind up. I'm wearing shorts and t-shirt one day, a cold sou'wester comes in overnight and drops a nice 15cm of dry winter snow on the mountains. Scrapped my plans of building 2 new veggie gardens (see this month's Whitelines for the "Life begins at 30" article Wink) and drove out to the Cheese.

Cheeseman's probably an unlikely choice for a powder day, but I had 2 days left on my Chill pass and Mt Hutt's not worth battling with on the Sunday in the school holidays - would be tracked out in 2 minutes and 48 seconds. Porters Pass was looking stunning as ever, covered in snow. The access road up to the Cheese was a bit sketchy though - no wonder so many people get punctures up there - nobody heard of clearing the road?! Still, barely anyone there so freshies all round.

    Spring riding @ Mt Cheeseman

Just T-Bars up there, the Ridge one being the slowest known to mankind. Still, it's only a small-ish mountain so you're up there a lot quicker than the likes of Porters (damn that 1km drag is dull). Spent the first few runs riding the right side, with a short hike to the summit of Mt Cockayne. Snow was soft, dry and wintery, just had to ride lightly as there wasn't loads of it before you hit Crusty and friends. Bits of tussock showing through in parts, but that always makes something to pop over.

Spring riding @ Mt Cheeseman My lines @ Cheeseman

After letting patrol know, I dropped over the back into Tarn basin a couple of times - untracked, full-speed straightlining it. After lunch (beer and cheese toasty), I couldn't resist hiking a bit further up the ridge (just look at that pic above!). Had spotted a few others skiing the far side of the basin, but wasn't too into their lines so picked a beauty for myself. Massive grin, massive Columbian effort to look back up at, followed by a bastard of a hike back out. Seriously, I was nailed after that one. Time for home. Yeh, the Cheese is worth a visit for a day - I suppose it's a bit like Cardrona in terms of terrain - nothing too steep. Very friendly, local crew up there - nice one. Here's the photos. By the way, I looked everywhere, all over the mountain but couldn't find any evidence of it being made of cheese. Disappointing

Oh, and I think there's some work for you up there, Dan Black. How do you like this bridge?

  • Happy 30th Birthday to the King of Kings!

Well done, you've made it, come and join the rest of us in the 30s. And make sure you read the "life begins at 30" article in this month's Whitelines. That should keep you farming! I think the pictures speak better than words...

  • The Melting Hutt

"I'm melting, I'm melting"...said Mount Hutt. Yep, Spring's here, the nor-wester has been battering the mountains, stripping snow off bit by bit. Still, that means warm temps, blue skies and slushy riding - sweet! Went up to Hutt today for all of the above, had another wicked day, even if it is a bit gutting coming towards the end of the season [:'(]

There's still over 2.5 metres up there, so they should easily make the 19th October closing date, if not later. Coronet closed for the season early, got another 30cm and opened it right back up again.

  • Ohau great it was to be back again

A winter season just wouldn't be complete without a roadtrip down to Ohau. With Alan Davis at the wheel, we set off after work on Friday, compulsory Maccas stop then into the darkness. So dark actually that we missed the turn for the mountains. Finally rocked up at Ohau lodge just before 10pm. No idea where they get this "it's 3.5 hours from Christchurch" from?!

    Saturday

Setting up to be an awesome spring day - barely a cloud in the sky and no wind. Having breakfast sat outside looking over lake Ohau is stunning every time - check out the view:

This was Sarah-Jaye's first day up the mountain this season (plenty wedding stuff to sort out this year!), and she was having a great one - riding well Smile Rode together for a couple of hours, letting the mountain soften up a bit. It's changed quite a bit up at Ohau - lots more pisted runs, fair few small park features and snow-making everywhere. Hiked the ridge, which almost went wrong being erm, caught a bit short part way up. Why is it that the further away you get from the facilities, the more you need a merde? Embarrassed

Anyway, up on the ridge there was quite a strong westerly coming in, but this was blowing snow back down into the back basin - sweet! Seeing as I was up there, thought I might as well get right up to the top - not been up there before. 20 mins later, I up above everything - incredible views over to Mt Cook and the lakes. It had snowed a bit earlier in the week and there were plenty of untracked lines. Got some awesome ones down through a couple of chutes, into the back powder bowl - pretty stoked with the hiking that day! As the sign says "if you can see the lodge/patrol/lift, you're in bounds". Spring snow - love it, just gotta watch out for the evil Ohau rocks.

Back to the lodge for beers, hot tub overlooking the lake, cramp (in the hot tub, kicking people opposite Embarrassed). Alan Davis got hold of us around dinner but still managed to get some filming done for the King's birthday video.

    Sunday

Lots more wind and temp had barely dropped overnight so things were pretty slushy straight away. Love the slush, hit everything you can, try not to land on the nose. Had a great morning farming around, but no hiking in that wind. Just as we were leaving, there it was, le Mono!!! First one I've seen in NZ since 2006. Party!!! Now either someone was taking the piss leaving this next to all the skis and snowboards or there was a very elusive monoboarder somewhere around. I looked everywhere for an 80s one-piece and a moustache but no sign of him.

    Viva Le Mono!!

Anyway, time to get ourselves back home, stopping for a bizarre lunchtime curry in Fairlie. Here's the pano shot I put together looking from the top of Ohau. That's the one! Ohau we'll be back again next year.

  • London Freeze

Ah, the days of Board-X, remember them? Freezing our asses off up at Alexandra Palace, then there might have been a (lame) one down at Battersea Park. Well that's all in the past cos I see you now have the London Freeze to get yourselves to. No need to tell you all about it as I'm sure their site can do a good job of that.

I expect a full GnarlyBoarders attendance! Get in there, ski suits on. And it has to be big hair to watch the Big Air. You know the rules. BeerDevil

  • Colonel for Rent...Any Takers?

Now we all know that he's been struggling to get back into the workforce since returning to the UK, but hadn't really expected things to get to this level so soon. Still, when there's a friend in need...any takers?

  • Best day of the season 2008

"Am I awake? Eh? What's going on? 5:45am?" thought a very confused and barely awake Sloth. "Holy crap, powder day!!" as he jumped out of bed and straight onto the snow reports. "Come on, come on...is it open?" Finally we got the green light at 6:30 and after a few more "right then"s, got out the door. Did have a full car thanks to SnowPool, but one dropped out at last minute.

    First Lift

Damn it was still so early - I'd never made it up the mountain before 10, let alone for first lift. Being a Saturday, bluebird conditions, no wind, plenty dry powder to ride, pretty much everyone had the same idea it seems. Massive queue for the chairs already. Quite gutting to watch it get tracked out so quickly while riding that first lift, but still we got a couple of runs of freshies straight down the middle. Back up and right the way round to the avalanche barriers run. Seriously everyone (including me) needed to calm down a bit - it was as if it was the last powder day ever. Scrambling, pushing past each other, saw far too many bloodwagons over the course of the day. Huh? Oh yeh, back to that run, just awesome - face shots all the way down then landed face first while scoping my line off a drop. Ahem. Hit this run another few times - great couple of chutes in there.

Queue for first lift on a powder day Freshies @ Mt Hutt

    Zinger Tower

Patrol were still setting off avalanches under Towers but everyone was keeping an eye on them as the whole of that side of the mountain was untracked. It really was everyone as well - the moment it opened the right side of the mountain emptied! I've never seen such a large area get tracked out so quick, neither have I seen queues like this for the triple chair:

Even the triple chair had a queue

With it being Spring temperatures and everything appearing to be tracked out, more and more people left the slopes and hit the bar. Well myself and Drew managed to find freshies right up until (nearly) last lift - it's all about knowing where to look Big Smile. This guy was riding like a cross between Jarmarl and the Good Stuff. Accidental front loops? Overspinning 360s? Face first all the time. Pushed each other to drop ever bigger rocks, all good thanks to the soft (freshly painted) landing.

The old Sloth's legs made it as far as the last run after the last run after the last run, but not quite last lift. If you see him, thank Alain for his legs for me. So much good riding that day, all I had time to take photos of was the lift queues (which were 15 mins at most all day). Shame because there were a couple of massive rooster tails I kicked up, but you know how it is. That could well be the last of the winter snow for this season, but you never know... Off to Ohau this weekend.

  • The only time I wished the mountain was closed

Woke up this morning, feeling fine, had something special on my mi-nd...Hang on, where's this going? Yesterday was neige, lots of it, but a very closed mountain. Today was much of the same, but with an extra 40cm on top. The usual "On Hold" trick on the snow report. I was up and ready to go but the vis was approximately 5cm by the look of it. Yep, Mr Goodey you would barely be able to see the end of your nose. Wink. By 11am it was still on hold and I'd say another 10cm had dropped in the front of the webcam. Couldn't be bothered with a 2 hour drive for half a day's riding so hoped and hoped it wouldn't open.

It didn't. Ferme pour tous le jour. First time I've been loving that news! Bcos tomorrow is shaping up to be the epic day of the season. They're now reporting 65cm+ of light, dry freshies, no wind-loading and bluebird conditions! Only slight downer is it's on a Saturday so the whole of ChCh will be up there. I've gotta get off to bed now as it's gonna be a 6am start for this one.

Got new bindings to farm out tomorrow too - some more Burton Cartels, picked up for a bargain in the Quest sale yesterday...first in best dressed type thing. 40% off thankyou please.
