As far as we knew we were just going away for a weekend of wineries, camping and cheese in the Waipara Valley. Little did we realise that just over the road from the campsite was the Waipara Hotel Speed Shearing Contest. 18 seconds to shear a sheep? Not this one though...

We also went round pretty much all of the wineries in this little-known region just 1 hour north of ChCh, stocking up on some great Sauv Blancs. Stayed at Waipara Sleepers, a load of old railway carriages and a station. Cooked a great barbie with our purchases from Riccarton Farmers Market that morning. Not happy with my hangover on Sunday though. No thanks. Even lunch at the amazing Norwester Cafe couldn't fix me.
