  • Hanmer Springs rides

I was up in Hanmer Springs yesterday with some of the Vorb crew for a couple of fine XC rides. Got up just in time for 10am kick-off, already quite a hot one (was 31c day before and didn't drop too much over night). Now I'm not going to remember what all of these trails were called as mtbrat was providing the local knowledge and linking all the sweetest bits up together. There was one bit called Bigfoot though which was a massive grins, whoop-whoop, yeeeharrrr, wow, love it, awesome. So I liked it then. Yep, that one reminded me of one of the Welsh trails, not sure whether it was CYB or Nant-Y-Arian, but whatever, it was damn fine. Mildred riding so well at the mo thanks to last week's tune-up. Sloth on fairly good form thanks to Mr Fancy's rigorous bull-fighting training schedule and swimming from Aus-NZ with Rob every morning.

Back into Hanmer after lots more up, lots more down and lots more twisty flowy stuff. Lunch at Powerhouse Cafe was disappointing - new owners have got it all wrong. Avoid. Group increased to 11 for the second ride - something a bit less hilly at first, then over and up to "Detox". Well you've seen it all before, Alain got the better of this one, ran down to zero energy after having lead the group through the forest. Yep, I was off pushing with a couple of others. Finally got to the top, nice sweeping singletrack back down and off back to Hanmer with some cramp thrown in for good measure. Apart from that end it was a wicked day out. Here's some pics:

Thanks to mtbrat (Vorb/Haven) for sorting it all out, thanks to SJ for letting me go and play while I should've been packing for the big move Wink

And another thing. 29 inch bikes (Niner). What's that all about then?! Not seen them before, but two of them out with us.

  • Dumping Everywhere!

The Winter of 2007/2008. Remember this one. Compared to this time last year, Mr Dumpy's been eating very well and has been consistently logging on day-by-day.

Furano, Japan: over a metre in the last week, heavy snow every day

France: Most resorts have had over a metre this week - pow-pow everywhere. Go Dan Black!

USA / Canada: well they always get loads so no change there!

And another thing, finally I've found a worthwhile Facebook app - RiderTech's Where I Ride. Check out all the places you've ridden, rate them, upload videos and pics, farm them out.

P.S. Terminal Ferocity - Mr King I thank you muchly for my package that arrived yesterday Yes  Big Smile. Only got about 20 mins into the Making Of so far, and SJ has threatened to take it from me thanks to young Miss Jones at the beginning!

  • Summer Rides

Decided that a new bike was way out of the question at the moment, what with buying house and Nippon just around the corner. So took Mildred in for a long overdue service at Bike HQ. The full works please, forks stripped down, rear shock sent off to the specialists, wheels trued, gears tuned, the lot. Picked her up a week later and Andre had done an awesome job Cool. Was all looking good at around $400, so got myself some new shorts too, farming out another discount (never pay full price for anything here!). Rode off down Colombo street and crunch, slip, dammit. New chain + old cassette ne march pas. Apparently the last chain was on 80% wear so almost got away with it. Another $62 and a new cassette, back on the road.

Straight out on Saturday up in the hills, back to my old favourite from Evans Pass to Godley Heads, down to Taylor's Mistake and back to the start. Plenty climbing, plenty tight switchback DH, 100% singletrack, 1 dead sheep. Damn Mildred's riding so, so well now. Just like new, getting full range of bounciness at last.

Also been out on other Port Hills rides and to Bottle Lake. Next weekend's a big one up in Hanmer Springs with Vorb people. Farm on summer!

  • Waipara Valley Speed Shearing

As far as we knew we were just going away for a weekend of wineries, camping and cheese in the Waipara Valley. Little did we realise that just over the road from the campsite was the Waipara Hotel Speed Shearing Contest. 18 seconds to shear a sheep? Not this one though...

And then there's a new challenge for Dan Black, but he'll need to get some help from the udders on this one:

We also went round pretty much all of the wineries in this little-known region just 1 hour north of ChCh, stocking up on some great Sauv Blancs. Stayed at Waipara Sleepers, a load of old railway carriages and a station. Cooked a great barbie with our purchases from Riccarton Farmers Market that morning. Not happy with my hangover on Sunday though. No thanks. Even lunch at the amazing Norwester Cafe couldn't fix me.

  • Poachers

Apparently there's still 4 resorts in the US that are ski-only. Yeah, no snowboarding. At all. Imagine that. Dunno whether this video thing is a good or bad thing though - it's just gonna piss these old-school skiers off so doesn't really make snowboarders look good. But, f%ck that - we should be able to ride wherever the pow is!

Well Burton are having none of this and have launched a video comp for best vid of snowboarding at each of these resorts.  Get yourselves over to http://www.burton.com/poachers to see the entries (hmm, only one of them so far, I don't reckon they'll get many!).

  • Sloth and Jarmarl To Go Deep in Japan

News just in from our reporters in London and Christchurch: Sloth, Jarmarl and their good friends Mr Fancy and Mr That to embark on mission to find Sookie and Her Old Guitar.

Four years of careful planning (continuously watching the Japan section in Saturation) have gone into this ground-breaking adventure in The Land of The Setting Sun. With such an epic trip in the bag, both Sloth and Jarmarl have been busy preparing themselves. Speaking to Mr Fancy earlier today, he explained about the rigorous (albeit slightly obscure) Bull-Fighting training schedule he has designed exclusively for Sloth.

      vs

Jarmarl, meanwhile has neglected all common sense and gone down the body-building and dietary supplements route, more of which you can read about here. He has also been studying the ancient art of "Wisestupba". Anyone any idea what that is? Find out please.

    Tokyo

First things first, the fearless adventurers have got to try and find each other in the sprawling madness that is Tokyo. Fortunately their flights from the UK and NZ are only arriving 20 mins apart, so what could possibly go wrong in that time? Jarmarl on his own in Tokyo? It doesn't bear thinking about! Straight in, no kissing, wasabi all round please. They've got a couple of days to play around the city, eat some bizarre creatures (but no whale thanks) and stock up on tap pants.

    Hokkaido

They've got to get themselves on an internal flight to Sapporo (Tokyo Dash thrown in the middle there somewhere - how much luggage can you get in to one Tokyo Subway?). From then on they'll be in the capable hands of Japan Powder Tours

8 days of deep powder will follow, all the time searching for the elusive Sookie and her old guitar. They shall of course endeavour to recreate as many scenes as possible from the aforementioned Saturation. There'll be no time for Alain on this roadtrip, he's not welcome here. The Hokkaido Powder Tour takes in: the open bowls, gullies and groomers of Niseko; the back-country and steeps of Kokusai and Teine; the secret stashes of Rusutsu; the ungroomed powder fields of Furano and Kamui. They are also around Sapporo at the time of the Sapporo Big Air – where they can watch the big boys (and girls) go bigger than any of us can imagine. Chuck in a trip to an Onsen (Japanese hot springs), plenty of sake and more endless powder and I think they'll be having the trip of a lifetime!

Plenty more to come on this epic journey in the coming weeks - only 9 weeks to go!!! Holy crap, time for some more bull-fighting! Best get the snorkels packed.

Keep up to date with how the season is coming along on this GoneBoarding thread and the snow conditions here. They had 25cm in Niseko last night, bringing it up to 133cm so far. It's only the beginning of December!!! Jeez, we only had 180cm all season at Coronet Peak. Surprise

p.s. can someone make sure he doesn't forget his jacket this time Wink
