  • Colonel scores a hat-trick

2008, the year of GnarlyBoarders' Weddings. Yes indeed, congratulations to the Colonel and Yolanda on their engagement at the weekend!! That makes it 3 weddings next year then.

There are as yet unconfirmed reports that this momentous occasion took place in a Bird Hide in Suffolk. Truly bizarre, a quality choice!!

Let's have some words from the man himself...

    Dear all…..

I just wanted to let everyone know that Yolanda and I got engaged on Saturday!  Thankfully the sedatives worked just fine and disorientated the poor girl long enough for me to gain her agreement….

We plan to get married in Autumn 2008.

    Lots of love to all,

    Robin and Yolanda xx

Henceforth, forthwith, Yolanda will be known as Mrs Colonel, or Highlander Coulange Trois aka the sister in-law that won the fight (whilst on official duties).

Fantastic news, well done, keep farming. Drinks

  • Avalanche Awareness Talks

Winter 2008 is just round the corner for you lot up there in the Northern Hemi. Hoping that at least some of us will get out on a good powder mish. Mr Lanche is unfortunately hanging around out there, so if you can, get along to one of the several Avalanche Awareness talks being held around the country. Even a little knowledge is better than fook-all. Since doing my one-dayer last year, it's already got me thinking about things and have turned round and not taken a route because of what I've learnt.

More info over here, but you better get in quick cos I think they sold out v quick last season (costs all of GBP 2!!)

Failing that, there's probably quite a few other talks/courses around.

  • Earthquake wakes Sloth

Got woken up at around 1:30am wondering what the hell was going on - bed vibrating, blinds rattling. A loud fart? Nope, seems we had an earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale. That's quite big as far as I know, but as it was offshore in a mostly uninhabited area, there wasn't any damage. Shows how far they travel though - we're on the other side of several mountain ranges, around 650km away!

Have been several aftershocks since then, but to be honest I get confused between them and movements in the pants area.

  • Oh, go on then, just one more powder day!

Funny old season this one. I'd packed all my kit away a few weeks' ago, storage wax on the boards, all ready for summer. There's only Mount Hutt and Broken River still open here and it's been dumping at both of them the last couple of days! 45cm+ at BR and 25cm+ at Hutt. I know where I'm going tomorrow then, balls to work, balls to jetlag, I want pow-pow. Check this pic out from this morning.

Almost every ski field across the South Island has had powder in its last week of the season. What's that all about then?! Same thing happened last year down in Queenstown. Fingers crossed the snow doesn't blow away/get rained on overnight (and a bit of vis would be good too), report to follow in the evening.

    Back to you

  • Look who's back in the UK

This one definitely surprised a few people. Sarah-Jaye and I flew over to the UK, but didn't tell many people we were coming. First up was Bob, thinking that Mr King had taken her away for a romantic weekend in the Cotswolds. There they were sitting the Ebrington Arms pub garden, when in walk us two. "Oh my god!! Sloooooth!!!" Poor girl couldn't understand it all, neither could Mumhead when we called her up - so confused. So that was all good, got out on a couple of good walks, dinner at the pub, stayed in a great B&B. From there it was up to Clara and Jon's, where Nicky and Nigel came up for the night. Managed to get ourselves a bit lost out on a walk with 2 babies. Thought we'd avoided the jetlag, but that kicked in properly so struggled to stay awake past 9pm. Down to Husbands Bosworth (driving over Dan Black's bridge on the way) and stayed with the Bird for another day. Gave Dan Black a call "fancy a pint? I'm in a pub 10 miles from your house!" More confusion there then.

Into That London, over to Clapham Junction and Northcote Road for pre-wedding beers with Matt. Next couple of days down in Sevenoaks, staying at Chris' and trying to get hold of the Mais boy, but finding that hard to sort out. Eventually turned up in his kitchen on the Friday - poor old boy very confused about all this! Matt and Georgie's wedding was on the Saturday, a great day and night. Managed to scare the crapola out of Bodders, Jarmarl, Colonel, Nicholas James Beneke, The Dog, pretty much everyone really. Didn't enjoy my hangover the next day one bit - definitely a top 5 with muchos vomitus. Found ourselves in some private members' club for a lunch we couldn't eat.

Down to Tunbridge Wells after that, 2 more babies to meet and stayed the night at Dave and Polly's. Plenty of cheese was consumed. Whatever you do though, don't get involved in watching In The Night Garden on CBeebies. Not good, wrecks your head with all that talk of the  Ninky-Nonk and Iggle-Piggle.

Spent most of the week working, dropped SJ back at Heathrow (note: never, ever drive to Heathrow from Tunbridge Wells on a wet Monday morning when the M25 is closed.. Reminds me why we left the UK!) Caught up with the boys a few more times that week, then it was all over and back to NZ again.

Plenty photos of the trip here. Rather than giving money to one of these "carbon-offsetting companies", which I'm not too sure about, we donated 50 trees to Trees For Canterbury. Some of them are planted over at Haven MTB Park. Hopefully that goes some way to balance out all this flying we're doing.

Great to see all of you that we could, sorry if we didn't get to see some of you, but will make sure of it next time (will actually tell people we're coming though!)

  • Nick Wins Fat Face Urban Downhill

Check this out from the fearless one from the sunny West Midlands...awesome stuff - top result, job well done. Congrats, Nick! YesBeer

    Blowing My Own Trumpet (Bagpipes)

So.  Entered this here Fat Face night ride - downhill urban race in Edinburgh... and went and won the Hardtail Category.  Bonkers.

Practice kicked off at 10am sharp, us hardtail boys were first off.  I set off down the first set of steps, all ok - take it easy first run then come to the bridge - pretty steep up, wrong gear to start with, so try and change while cranking up - getting a bit of a cheer for being the first one to try and ride it.  Yeeeeaaaahh... turns to Oooooh as my chain snaps in two.  Sh1t.  Pick up the pieces and cruise down the rest of the course chainless.

Quick visit to Si at descent-gear reveals that I've also taken a chunk out of one of the cogs on my cassette.  My choice of 8-speed means I either take time out to find a halfords and bog standard 8 speed chain and cassette - or purchase new shifter, mech, chain and cassette.  'Fortunately' Si has all the above, gives me a modest discount and the use of his Park Tools while Caroline hunts and gathers some breakfast.

Second Practice run about 11.30 sees me make it most of the way down before slipping a foot off a pedal near the bottom of the last set of steps sending me sliding shoulder first down the cobbles.  Sh1t.
"You alright?"   "Yep, sweet".  Body armour = a good thing... cruise round the corner to the finish with twisted bars and a bruised ar5e.
Third practice run - i make it all the way down with a clean run save for some confusion with new sram trigger shifter... spin my way over the line after shifing up instead of down.

Seeding comes around - aiming for a good solid run, all goes well after sprinting up the ramp of the bridge (not tempting fate by trying to ride it again).. back on the bike at the top ready to shoot down the other side... next thing i know, I'm face to face with the plyboard surface.  wtf?!  Seems I caught a bit of scaffolding with my arm pad swiftly depositing myself on the deck. Sh1t.

Get up, cane the rest of it and this time have speed to clear the car jump before crossing the line... Qualify in 9th, 3/4 seconds down from the category leader.

Quick shower, early dinner catching the end of elite qualifying then a chilled stroll around Edinburgh's old town and back up to the Castle Esplanade for 7pm and the start of racing proper.  The crowds are out in force, atmosphere at the start noticeably different, as is the start itself.  With the tourists gone, we have a sprint through the square before reaching the first set of steps.  I manage a good, fast, clean run and hear I'm in the lead as I cross the line... I'm still in the lead as they start calling the youth riders... unsure if that means I've won!?

Of course - turns out i had, so hotel, shower, change, back to catch the elites come down.  Amazing atmosphere - bike fans and general public loving it, shouting , cow bells and air horns... Fancy That Productions Edinburgh division in attendance

I get to stand on a podium for the first time since sports day 1994, and the very nice people from MTB Direct give me a Solid Bikes Harlem hardtail frame and some pimp Electric goggles, some girl gives me a kiss and some minging tyres ( www.sweetskinz.com - hmmm...), and a dude from Fat Face gives me a t-shirt and a magnum of sparkling perry, and instructs me to spray it at people while dudes in hi-vis vests take photos.  Result!

Loads of photos on flickr now... just search for fat face , Edinburgh.

any offers of sponsorship or more free stuff welcome :)

see you all for a ride on a more forgiving surface soon i hope... apologies for the essay - blame Wolfe, he asked for it.

    Nick

ps - anyone want to buy new unused hardtail frame or lovely semi slick tyres? (minor soiling from pear based alcoholic beverage included)

  • Mr That sells out to the competition!

It is with great regret that I can now confirm our suspicions about Mr That. While Mr Fancy has been on an overseas posting, his (former) partner in crime has sold himself (and no doubt his ass) to the competition, namely Smiffy's fancy dress attire. The evidence is here before us, modelling the "Hello Sailor" suit for the 2007 range. Doesn't look too happy about it though. Mr That, step forward and explain yourself! I challenge you to a duel at dawn.
