End of Spring MTB Ride - Chiltern Hills

It's been a long time coming, but Dan Black and myself got out for an excellent ride today in the Chiltern Hills. Makes a nice change riding bridleways again rather than trail centres (good though they are, reckon you get to see more by doing this type of ride).

Definitely recommend this route if you're after a good 1/2 day ride - plenty to play around with and lots of options to extend it here and there.

Kent Snowboarding Day 4

At this rate, I'm gonna end up doing more days in Kent than I did in the whole of my last season in NZ!! So there we were again, more fresh and time to get back out there. Chris had managed to find two of those 80s classic sledges - now they don't make them like that any more - unbreakable and turbo-fast! Lots more people turned up this time but still plenty of untracked for us.

As usual, here's some pics.

Was about to leave when we noticed the farmer driving up in a big digger. Now I was expecting him to tell us to get out of the field, but no - he started shovelling loads of snow, taking it up one of the slopes and piling it up for us to build a nice kicker!! Get in. He left without so much of a word. Now we're farming!! Bloody nicely shaped wedge it was too if I say so myself.

Never would've thought I'd be doing this much riding in Kent, but here it is. Another fantastic morning with nobody about. Just wouldn't mind a lift or two cos walking up gets Alain right out.

Great conditions in Kent again this morning. Another 5cm overnight and a huge bowl of my own to play in :thumbsup:

How times have changed

10 years old we may be, but numbers are certainly dwindling. As I write this, I know only 3 of us committed to getting out in the mountains so far this year. Yes, only 3. Even those without kids aren't into it any more.

A few years ago we almost had to restrict the number of people coming out to play. How many of us were there in The Hof?! Great times.

Come on, let's get some of the love back, who's keen for the next one, in March? (book late, wait and see where's got best conditions. deals are amazing this season!)

The tractors have all be in for quite a long service this summer/autumn/winter (I've no idea what season it's supposed to be - November in shorts anyone?). Now they're all nicely tuned and ready to push a bit further east this time.

So St(uart) Anton on 31st January 2010 it is, for Mr Fancy and Mr That. Bit of a disappointingly small crew to be honest, but that means more pow-pow for us! Dan Black meanwhile is off to see how Valerie's Big Hair the week before.

Once we've got this trip all sorted, will be looking to get the farm machinery out again for some time in March - a bit of sun, neige and fancy with all the old crew - who's down for this one?

I still find it hard to believe, but the word on the street is that those 3 pests from Affleck are fully trained and entering (from behind) this weekend's London Triathlon. In the words of the Good One himself "Sangers has got his armbands, G-man’s stabilisers are fitted and I’ve got new legs Lieutenant Dan!"

Best of luck my dear boys. No word on any charities benefiting from this? Did you want sponsoring?

Stabilisers defo a good thing - that G-Man could barely ride in a straight line last I saw (admittedly that was on the back of a tandem after wine tasting all day)

Straight in no kissing, here we go with a beaut of a day, just 4 days after the first. No time for girly legs this time round.

So I took 2 randoms off SnowPool again - oh dear oh dear. So the first one gets in and pretty much says nothing at all from leaving my road all the way to the mountain. The other one gets in and does nearly the same. Great, this was really worth it. Only managed slightly more on the journey back - sometimes I wonder is it worth bothering? Do you actually want to go to the mountain? Anyone? FFS!

Mt Hutt - Winter 2009 Day 1

I almost ran out of time, but there was no way I wasn't going riding in June, especially as Mt Hutt had been open since the end of May! Got someone from Snowpool to come up for the day, which was all good. Must've been a bit excited/Alain/whatever on the way up as went to overtake a coach on the road up, not realising what I thought was road was actually a snow drift . Trusty old Rosie kept going though and farmed it back on to the road. That would've been sooo embarassing to get stuck! Or worse if I'd gone off the edge. Stoked to get parked straight in front of the steps too - nobody around.

Anyway, here's the rest of what happened, not that I'm selling out to GoneBoarding, but I just got round to writing that report straight away:

It’s snowing at last!

We’re a full month into the season and this Sloth still hasn’t been up the mountain yet! Things are finally looking up though, up the top, right up there. 10cm freshies overnight, still snowing now and more looking likely for next couple of days. All of this with no wind makes Sloth a happy Sloth.

Just wish I’d got all my kit together last night now. Vis isn’t looking great today though. No idea what Metservice are on about this year. How can they forecast rain when the freezing level is 800m? Fools! Their forecasting is bad at the best of times, but now it doesn’t even make sense.

Hopefully the next report you get will be of a powder-laden Sloth :)
